History and Development

Applied Economics at Shanghai International Studies University was launched in 1998 under the approval of the Ministry of Education. Currently, it has three academic graduate programs: International Trade, Finance, and Statistics. As one of the pioneers in multidisciplinary graduate programs among foreign language universities in China, International Trade started to enroll students in 1999. The graduate program of Finance was launched in 2010, and it soon becomes one of the most prosperous programs among domestic universities. Applied Statistics was launched in 2012, and re-named as Statistics in 2019. After more than 20 years of efforts, our programs attract more and more students nationwide. With stable and dynamic research fields, the program of Applied Economics has begun to take shape, and become a promising candidate for doctorate granting institution. 

Programs of Applied Economics aim at cultivating multidisciplinary professionals with a global perspective. Students are expected to have a good command of English, theories and practice of economics, and tools of global economy and business. They are expected to be proficient at intercultural communication.

Research Areas

The graduate program of Statistics aims to cultivate highly sought-after professionals with a solid theoretical foundation in Economics and Finance and a rigorous training in related areas. It teaches students statistical and computational programming skills, theory and methodology in economic and social statistics, enabling them to analyze and solve complex problems by using appropriate statistical theories and methods.

Our programs offer students opportunities to study abroad. We have established joint programs at different levels with several prestigious universities. As one of our long-term partner institutions, University of Trento (Italy) has worked with us to offer our students double degree. Other partner institutions provide short-term exchange programs.

Employment Prospects

Our students have good employment prospects, and they are among the most sought-after by employers such as colleges and universities, government agencies, accounting firms, foreign and domestic banks, multinational corporations.
