Data Science and Big Data Technology (Natural Language Processing & Financial Big Data)

The program of Data Science and Big Data Technology (Natural Language Processing and Financial Big Data) was newly approved by the Ministry of Education of China in 2020, and graduates of the program will be awarded a bachelor degree of science (BS). We have a high-level and well-structured teaching and research team from the fields of computer and big data technology, statistics and mathematics, and financial big data. We have set up two scientific research centers: Center for Big Data Finance and Center for Big Data and Applied Statistics. Experts and scholars from prestigious universities and research institutions at home and abroad such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, Fudan University, East China Normal University, and other industry experts from the China Securities Regulatory Commission, the State Administration of Taxation, and the China Financial Futures Exchange are invited as adjunct professors or industry mentors. 

Objectives 

The program of Data Science and Big Data Technology (Natural Language Processing and Financial Big Data) focuses on the application of big data technology in the financial field and other industry sectors, aiming to train high-level financial talents with a global vision, liberal education, and the ability to adapt themselves to the development in the era of big data and artificial intelligence. This program offers our students the basic tools and methods which integrate the knowledge of such disciplines as statistics, computer science, applied mathematics, economics and finance. Students of this program not only have professional knowledge in computer programming, statistics and data mining, but also can apply these tools proficiently in the fields of economics and finance, to gain insight into the laws and trends of financial markets, and solve practical problems in the financial field. For undergraduate students of this major, dual degrees and dual programs are also provided. Students will obtain a BS degree after completing all the required credits and passing the thesis defense. An English minor program is also available to those who want to take more courses of English language and literature and obtain a BA degree after completing the required credits.

Curriculum

Core courses: Introduction to Data Science, Big Data Development Technology, Parallel and Distributed Computing, Database Principles and Applications, Python Programming, Operations Research Methods and Models, Stochastic Processes, Mathematical Modeling, Natural Language Processing Principles, Quantification Investment Analysis, Finance, Discrete Mathematics, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, Operating Systems, etc.

English language courses: Intensive Reading, Extensive Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, Translation, etc. A small-sized class teaching model is adopted for all English courses. Students can take TEM–4 and TEM–8 in the sophomore year and senior year respectively, and those who pass the afore-mentioned tests are awarded a certificate of the corresponding test, and are recognized as having the same proficiency as English majors. 

Employment Prospects

Our graduates have good employment prospects.They are well sought after by financial institutions, artificial intelligence technology enterprises, or offered data analysis and management decision-making positions in governmental, economic and information departments.
