The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM), an international contest for high school students and college undergraduates, challenges teams of students to clarify, analyze, and propose solutions to open-ended problems. The contest attracts diverse students and faculty advisors from over 900 institutions around the world. The Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM), an extension of the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM), is designed to develop and advance interdisciplinary problem-solving skills as well as competence in written communication. Teams apply mathematics to model, develop, and communicate a solution to a real-world problem.

The MCM/ICM are true team competitions. Each team may consist of one, two, or three (maximum allowed) students. Historically, the best teams have three members.

For contestants, participating in such contests is a chance to challenge their brains, solve a real world math problem, and get recognition for it on an international stage.  It is an excellent opportunity to develop their interpersonal skills through teamwork.

SEF’s team received a “Meritorious Winner” designation in the 2019 MCM contest: http://www.sef.shisu.edu.cn/cd/b9/c1649a118201/page.htm
